The Vietnamese Vice President, Mrs Nguyen Thi Doan, has awarded the title Labour Hero to meritorious teacher Le Cong Co, Principal of the Duy Tan University in Da Nang, for his great efforts towards the development of local education over recent years.  The awards ceremony took place in the city last Friday.

Also present at the event were the municipal Party Committee Secretary, Mr Nguyen Xuan Anh, the Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Mr Pham Manh Hung, and the Da Nang People’s Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Dang Viet Dung.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister Hung highlighted the growth of the University over the past 21 years under the leadership of Principal Co.  He remarked “Principal Co has made great efforts to make Duy Tan University a modern and high-quality educational institute”.

The meritorious teacher has been a pioneer in establishing this private university in the central region, and he is the first person in the country working for a private educational institute to receive the notable title.

Before 1975, Principal Co was actively involved in revolutionary activities in the southern region.  Between 1987 and 1992, he was a National Assembly member in Session VIII.  Then he retired early from that job to realise his dream of setting up an educational institute.

Duy Tan University was officially opened in 1994 and, since then, it has produced around 40,000 high-quality graduates for the community.  It was the first private university in the country to be allowed to offer postgraduate degrees.
