6 Nobel winners to attend int'l workshop in Viet Nam in July

Six Nobel laureates are scheduled to gather at an international workshop held as part of the famous months-long “Rencontres du Viet Nam” meeting, to begin later this month, in south-central Viet Nam.

The upcoming event is the 12th edition of Rencontres du Viet Nam (Meet Viet Nam), a major science and education program with the aim of helping Vietnamese and Pacific-Asian scientists to establish contacts and exchanges with Western colleagues, including many Nobel laureates.

The meeting’s this year runs from June 26 to December 17, consisting of 13 separate seminars and workshops and three physics classes, at the International Center of Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon, the capital of Binh Dinh Province.

One of the highlighted events of the meeting is the Fundamental Science and Society workshop on July 7 and 8, with the participations of six Nobel laureates and Vietnamese mathematician Ngo Bao Chau.

The Nobel winning participants are David Gross (Physics, 2004), Carlo Rubbia (Physics, 1984), Jerome Fiedman (Physics, 1990), Kurt Wuthrich (Chemistry, 2002), Finn Kydland (Economics, 2004) and Jean Jouzel (Peace, 2007).

Professor Ngo Bao Chau won the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize of mathematics, in 2010.

The two-day workshop will be structured around round tables addressing various historical, current and future issues relevant to fundamental science and society, with an opening up towards Asian countries, particularly developing countries around Viet Nam, according to the Rencontres du Viet Nam website.

The Nobel laureates are also scheduled to have several public talks during their time in Quy Nhon.
