Viet Nam’s team finished third at the 2016 ASEAN Skills Competition (ASC) with ten gold, five silver, and four bronze medals as the event wrapped up Wednesday in Malaysia.

The ten gold medals were spread across six skill categories: maintaining computer numerical control (CNC) machines (two golds); industrial automation (two golds); electronics (one gold); and mechanical engineering design (one gold).

Viet Nam’s medals were also accompanied by 15 individual certificates of excellence, according to the Office of the General Directorate of Vocational Training (GDVT) under Viet Nam Ministry of Labor, War Invalids, and Society.

The 11^th edition of the competition attracted 280 young skilled workers from nine out of ten ASEAN member countries (excluding Brunei), competing in 23 occupational skills and two performance skills.

ASEAN, or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, is a ten-member politico-economic organization whose members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

Viet Nam’s team of 44 workers competed in 22 occupational skills in the five-day competition, which commenced on Saturday.

Malaysia ranked first with 24 gold, four silver and five bronze medals, while Indonesia placed second. Thailand and Singapore ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

The biennial event provides an opportunity for the exchange of knowledge, expertise and experience between delegates from member countries.

The next ASC will be held in Thailand in 2018, while Singapore will host the 13^th ASC in 2020, according to GDVT.

This year marks Viet Nam’s ninth consecutive year participating in the competition, which the country has won three times in 2004, 2006 and 2014.
