Over recent years, Da Nang has been applying many information technology (IT) solutions to its traffic management and monitoring work.

In particular, in December 2016, the Traffic Police Division under the municipal Department of Police opened its own official Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/129222367470578/ to receive traffic updates from local residents and visitors.

Major Pham Hong Hai from the Traffic Police Division said, “To date, members of the page’s management group have received around 5,000 opinions and complaints from locals and visitors, at a daily average of between 25 and 30.  The opinions will usually be responded to by members of the page’s management group, whilst more complicated matters will be reported to local relevant agencies.”

In addition to receiving transport-related complaints and suggestions from local residents and visitors, a wide range of the city’s traffic regulations, traffic accident hotspots, and traffic skills, have been publicised on the page.

Major Hai noted that, in the near future, lists of traffic violators captured via the city’s surveillance cameras will be posted on the Facebook page every week.  The aim is to inform traffic violators about their violations so that they can contact local police and pay their fines.

A total of 68 security cameras have been installed at 18 traffic intersections across the city in order to monitor and deal with traffic violations.

Apart from the city budget-funded cameras, there are others installed by some individuals and organisations in the city.  The camera system operating by the ‘Da Nang Development’ group is a typical example.  The group’s cameras help local relevant agencies to monitor the traffic situation at around 20 important traffic junctions such as the Han River and Dragon bridges, and an overpass at the Hue T-junction.

Recently, the Ford Foundation granted Da Nang 36,000 USD for installing more traffic surveillance cameras at traffic intersections near local schools and in dense residential areas.

Earlier this year, the Da Nang Centre for Integrated Circuit Design (CENTIC) launched an artificial intelligence integrated camera which is able to identify some basic traffic violations.

This smart camera is being installed on a trial basis at the traffic intersection of Trung Nu Vuong and Nui Thanh.  It will help local traffic police to monitor and detect vehicles violating the city’s traffic rules.  Then, images of traffic violators, the violation times and venues, and the registration plates of the violating vehicles will be publicised via the website http://camera.centic.vn.
