The country fell 25 places due to the cyber attacks on the country’s airlines in 2016 and the widespread Wannacry ransomware infections in May this year. Singapore topped the ranking with a score of 0.925 while Malaysia was in the third place.

The GCI is a survey that measures the commitment of member states to cybersecurity to classify and project development process at the regional and global levels. It is based on five pillars: technical, organisational, legal, capacity building and cooperation.

The GCI also classified its member states into three categories based on their cybersecurity development. The initiating stage consists of 96 countries, including Viet Nam; maturing stage at 77 countries and leading stage with 21 countries.

A series of cyber attacks in 2016 and the first half of 2017 has urged member countries to tighten their commitment for a safer world in the era of modern technologies.

The ITU is a United Nations agency responsible for the management of global radio spectrum and international telecommunication regulations. Viet Nam joined the union in 1951.
