The team revealed the figure at an exercise on cyber security in the central and Central Highlands regions that took place in Da Nang city on September 4.

Of the figure, there were some 2,500 phishing and 4,200 deface attacks during the period, the VNCERT said.

In the central and Central Highlands regions, about 25,000 computers faced risks or were infected with malicious viruses.

The annual drill that aims to improve the capacity of the national cyber security emergency response network gathered more than 100 cyber security experts in the regions.

A report released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in late March 2019 shows Vietnam was ranked 50th out of 175 positions of 194 countries and territories worldwide in the global cyber security index, up from 100th position in 2017.

The country ranked 11th among 38 countries and territories in Asia-Pacific, and fifth out of 11 countries in Southeast Asia in this regard, after Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
