Over the past 5 years, the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology has conducted 29 research studies in medicine and pharmacy, worth about 20 billion VND in total.

Amongst them, 21 new and advanced technical applications have been used during medical examinations and treatment in the city.

Also, the municipal Department of Health has implemented an annual average of between 250 and 300 projects across the city. Notably, the research studies feature a full range of treatment areas, including nursing, pharmacy, public health, disease prevention, and medical and hospital quality management.

These projects have benefited patients, thereby contributing to improving the quality of healthcare service for local residents, and promoting the reputation of the city's health sector.

These positive results have been mainly attributed to the great efforts made by the Department of Science and Technology in encouraging individuals and organisations across the city to conduct their scientific research. In addition, the Department has promoted the application of highly-appreciated scientific research.

Mrs Vu Thi Bich Hau, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, said in recent years, the city has been focusing on conducting scientific research activities in medicine and pharmacy.

“Apart from promoting the application of new technologies in medical check-ups and treatment, the city has brought its scientific research to fruition at hospitals in order to enhance the quality of medical examinations and treatment for patients there” she added.

Specifically-mentioned is venous blood filtration method which has been applied at the Intensive Care and Anti-Poisoning Ward of the Da Nang General Hospital. The new method has significantly contributed to saving the lives of patients with life-threatening diseases.

Following recent approval from the Department of Health, a research study on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) method in screening tests for the early detection of cervical cancer has been applied at district-level hospitals and medical stations. This has helped the healthcare sector set up a cervical cancer screening network which is under the supervision and support of the municipal Centre for Reproductive Health.

The Da Nang-based Traditional Medicine Hospital has combined 3 methods of electromagnetism, fire dragon massage, and herbal medicine into drug detoxification. This has helped to diversify drug detoxification methods in the city. The new model has been implemented effectively at the Bau Bang Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Bac Commune.

Most notably, the application of advanced science and technology in the drug manufacturing industry has contributed to promoting the development of the city's pharmaceutical industry, and replacing imported drugs with locally-made ones.
