Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies to create new - or modify existing - business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements.

Digital transformation is an irreversible trend, promising to open up more great opportunities for Da Nang, and Viet Nam at large, to make more breakthroughs during its progress.

Opening doors to digital transformation

Digital transformation is considered to be the backbone of the burgeoning Industry 4.0, and an effective way to enhance the capacity and competitiveness of Vietnamese businesses.

According to the Department of Informatics under the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications, digital transformation is the application of digital technology to fundamentally impact all aspects of business and society.

Meanwhile, FPT Corporation's research experts defined digital transformation for enterprises as the process of transforming a traditional enterprise to a digital one by boosting the application of such new technologies as big data, the Internet of things (IoT), and cloud computing.

Grasping this opportunity, the Vietnamese government has accelerated digital transformation by implementing Viet Nam's National Digital Transformation Programme by 2025 with a vision to 2030.

Under the programme, Viet Nam strives to be named among the top 50 countries in the world in the E-Government Development Index (EGDI), the top 50 nations in the world in information technology countries (IDI), and one of the 35 leading countries in the Global Innovation Index (GII), over the next 5 years.

The digital economy is hoped to account for 20% of Viet Nam’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2025 and at least 10% of each sector.

All national databases that create the foundation for e-government development, including those on population, land, business registration, finance, and insurance, will be completed, connected, and shared nationwide.

Viet Nam also plans to universalise broadband internet and 5G services, have over 80% of its population using e-payment accounts, and become one of the top 40 countries in the Global Cybersecurity Index.

From now until 2025, Viet Nam will focus on developing four types of digital enterprises, namely those developing core technologies, developing digital technology products, and providing digital technology solutions and digital-technology start-ups.

Da Nang starts digital transformation

On 15 November 2020, Da Nang Party Committee's Publicity and Training Department partnered with Department of Science and Technology and the Union of Science and Technology Associations in the city to organise a symposium about the vital role of transformation and artificial intelligence in the city’s socio-economic development.

Since the start of this year, the municipal Department of Information and Communications has actively boosted digital transformation in Da Nang.

Specifically, on 22 January, the department signed a decision to pilot digital transformation in some Da Nang-based businesses, and authorities at ward and commune levels. The focus has been on forming digital culture associated with cultural protection, and providing smart utilities for citizens and businesses in Da Nang.
