Innovating teaching methods from local education subjects
Under the General Education Programme (GET) 2018, local education becomes one of the compulsory subjects and educational activities. For senior and high school levels, local educational subject has the same position as others.
Pupils of the Hien Nhan Junior and Senior High School participate in an extracurricular trip themed ‘Beliefs and religions’ at the Marble Mountains scenic spot in the local education subject. |
Local education helps pupils understand where they live, foster love for their homeland, and a sense of learning and applying what they have learned, contributing to building their homeland.
It is known that the Local Education programme is built on 5 topics with a total of 35 lessons/year. As for the topic ‘Beliefs and religions’, it is divided into 6 lessons.
Teachers conduct 2 lessons at school to provide pupils with an understanding of issues related to lesson content according to guidance documents of the Department of Education and Training. The remaining lessons will be organised in the form of a study tour at the Marble Mountains scenic spot.
Attending the lesson with pupils, we thought we were participating in a ‘back to roots’ tour with the teacher in charge of the topic being a tour guide. Through the tour, pupils had the opportunity to learn about local beliefs, worship customs, and the formation and development of local religions.
After the study tour, pupils also participated in many experiential activities, including paper-tearing.
Through the learning and experience session, participants freely expressed their feelings through creativity, thereby cultivating passion for the subject and make the subject more attractive.
