During the 1950s, Hoi An offered a quiet and apparently idyllic daily life. Local residents were involved in growing rice and corn, fishing, wood carving, and making pottery.
Being in the lower part of the Thu Bon River, Hoi An regularly suffers from flooding in the autumn rainy season. Memories of past historic floods, especially those in 1950 and 1964, remain deep in the minds of the residents.
