HQ-561 - a mobile hospital at sea

Beginning operations in early 2013, hospital ship Khanh Hoa 01, coded HQ-561, is responsible for providing healthcare services for military personnel, residents and fishermen on the Truong Sa archipelago and on the DK1 oil rig.

Built by the Z189 Shipbuilding Company of the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence and based at Khanh Hoa Province’s Cam Ranh Port, the ship also takes military officers, servicemen and passengers to visit and work on the archipelago, and delivers food and fresh water to the soldiers and people living there.

The 70m-long, 13m-wide and 2,070-ton ship can carry around 200 passengers, crew members, and doctors.  It is able to stay at sea continuously for 45 days and withstand a wind speed of level 8.

There are 3 hospital wards providing a total of 15 hospital beds and there is a medicine room.  Most notably, the operating theatres and consultation rooms are equipped with live transmission systems connected to Military Hospital 175 in Ho Chi Minh City.
