Quang Nam Province's fokienia heritage trees
The Viet Nam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) recently recognised a population of 725 fokienia trees in Quang Nam Province as heritage trees of Viet Nam. The evergreen tree, otherwise known as the Fujian cypress, is very rare in Viet Nam and is listed as an endangered species in the Viet Nam Red Book
This particular population occurs in the Axan and Tr’hy mountainous communes of Tay Giang District, and each tree recognised by VACNE has a diameter of at least 1.5 metres.
For many years, the province’s Co Tu ethnic minority people have made every effort to ensure the best conservation of this type of tree since it is considered a sacred plant.
Here are some photos of the heritage trees in the Axan and Tr’hy communes. The photos were taken by photographer Huy Dang, a freelance photographer for Da Nang Today.
