25 March saw Vietnamese Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc grant an investment policy decision to the development of shared infrastructure in the Lien Chieu port project. Da Nang People's Committee (PC) acts as the governance body for this large-scale landmark project.

The planned construction site of the Lien Chieu Port is located at the foot of the Hai Van Pass, in Hoa Hiep Bac Ward, Lien Chieu District.

It is known that the shared infrastructure construction in the new port will be carried out during the 2020 – 2024 period at a cost of 3,426.3 billion VND funded by Viet Nam's national and Da Nang governments.

The new port could receive cargo ships of up to 100,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) and container ships with loading capacities from 6,000 to 8,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEUs), plus 10,000 DTW liquid cargo vessels.

Here is the proposed site for the constriction of breakwater systems, navigation channel, turnaround places and marine signaling systems, traffic facilities connected internal roads of the port to National Highway 1A.

The first stage of the project is expected to meet an annual capacity of handling a combined total of up to 5 million tonnes of cargo. Its subsequent stages will aim to reduce the overload at the Tien Sa and Son Tra terminals, and reduce traffic volumes going through the inner city.

Under the Prime Minister-approved adjustments to the Da Nang Master Plan to 2030, with a vision to 2045, the Lien Chieu port will boast annual capacity of handling 50 million tonnes, covering an area of about 450 hectares (including the water surface).
