Gastronomy enthusiasts in several parts of Viet Nam, including Da Nang, on Wednesday, admired ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’- the only total lunar eclipse of 2021- with their naked eyes. Interestingly, a full moon, a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse occurred on the same day Wednesday -a rare lunar trifecta. A ‘supermoon’ is when a full moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. The May full moon is sometimes known as the ‘flower moon’ in traditional folklore because it's typically at a time of year when spring flowers emerge.

The total eclipse lasted around 15 minutes. During totality, eclipse observers noticed the full moon to completely darken and turn to coppery red colour. The briefest sight of totality was due to the moon passing remarkably close to the outer rim of the umbral shadow.

Whatever the reason, if you missed seeing the lunar eclipse on Wednesday, you can take a look at stunning photos of the rare sight of the ‘Super Flower Blood Moon’, taken by our freelance lensman Tran Minh Tri.
