The Viet Nam-Thailand Joint Working Group on Political and Security Cooperation convened its sixth meeting in the central city of Da Nang on August 7.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security, Lieut. Gen. To Lam, and General Secretary of the Thai National Security Council Pattanatabut co-chaired the two-day event.

The two sides exchanged views on regional and international issues that affect each country’s security and assessed progress in the Viet Nam-Thailand relationship.

They affirmed their commitments to not allowing any individual or organisation to take advantage of each country’s territory to oppose the other.

The working group reviewed the two countries’ cooperation in combating cross-border crimes, national defence, judiciary and other related issues.

They also discussed and proposed measures to reduce violations committed by fishermen and fishing boats at the minimum level as well as cooperate in dealing with illegal workers.

The two sides adopted a working programme for the 2014-2016 period in order to implement the Viet Nam-Thailand Security Vision and other high-level agreements.

The meeting followed the establishment of a strategic partnership between the two countries during a visit to Thailand by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam Nguyen Phu Trong in June which marked a new step in the development of bilateral relations.

The next meeting will be held in Thailand in 2014.
