Deputy PM elected Fatherland Front leader

A Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) consultative conference on September 5 elected Deputy Prime Nguyen Thien Nhan president of the VFF to replace incumbent president Huynh Dam.

Huynh Dam will retire from public life, according to a report submitted to the Party’s Political Bureau presented by State President Truong Tan Sang at the conference.

Professor Nguyen Lan Dung praised Huynh Dam for his great contributions to the VFF over the years, saying despite his age he has always gone to disadvantaged areas to inquire into local people’s living conditions.

He also congratulated Nhan on his election as VFF President and hoped the Deputy PM will help strengthen the great national unity bloc alongside the government affairs.

The newly elected VFF President called on Vietnamese people of all social strata, including those living overseas, to continue responding to VFF campaigns to build a united, prosperous Vietnamese nation.

Born in 1953, Prof. and Dr. Nguyen Thien Nhan studied economics at Magdeburg University in Germany, community administration at Oregon University in the US.  He was also trained in investment project appraisal at Harvard University, the US.

He held key Party and administration positions in HCM City and was elected a member of the Party Central Committee at the 10th National Party Congress.

He was elected Minister of Education and Training of Viet Nam between 2006 and 2010.   

He was elected Deputy Prime Minister of Viet Nam in 2007 and a member of the Party’s Political Bureau in May 2013.
