They included Senator Ben Cardin, Chairman of the East Asian and Pacific Affairs Subcommittee under Senate Committee on Foreign Relations; Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific under House Committee on Foreign Affairs; and Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, a member of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel and the House Committee on Natural Resources.

The MPs highlighted the progress in the two countries’ relations over the years and potential for future development, saying that 2015 will mark a new milestone in the US-Vietnam ties as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of the normalisation.

They regarded the Asia-Pacific region as the US’s key strategic focus with ASEAN, including Viet Nam, playing a significant role.

They stressed their view that territorial disputes should be solved via peaceful means in accordance with international law and the regional codes of conduct.
