On Tuesday, some of Da Nang’s leaders met with over 1,600 retired senior military officers who are now living in the city, on the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the Viet Nam People’s Army and the 27th anniversary of the Whole People’s Defence Festival Day (22 December).  These military officers are either colonels or senior lieutenant colonels.

The participants together recalled the heroic and glorious revolutionary traditions of the city-based armed forces, and of the Viet Nam People’s Army as a whole, over the past 72 years.

In his speech at the event, Colonel Nguyen Thanh Hoang, the Political Commissar of the city’s Military Command, remarked that the local armed forces have been strengthened and always deserve the trust of the Party and local residents.  Most notably, the retired field-grade officers have made glorious achievements in Viet Nam’s struggles for national liberation, and during the city’s socio-economic progress.  They always remain bright examples for younger generations to follow.

Addressing the event, municipal Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Xuan Anh highly appraised the city-based armed forces, especially the retirees, for their great devotion to the city’s construction and development over recent years.

The city leader also briefed the retirees on the preparations for next year’s important events, including the 20th anniversary of Da Nang’s recognition as a centrally-governed city, the Da Nang International Fireworks Festival, and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week.

Secretary Anh also expressed his belief that the retirees would continue their efforts for the city’s growth in the years ahead.

Under the authorisation of the State President, Secretary Anh presented first, second and third-class Fatherland Defence Orders to those who were leaders and commanders of the city-based military agencies.  The granting was in recognition of their active involvement in strengthening the performance of the Viet Nam People’s Army, guaranteeing national defence, and bolstering the cause of the socialist construction, protection, and progress of the Fatherland.
