There was a decrease in the overall number of crimes last year, including causing injury intentionally to another person, robbery, and fraudulent appropriation of property.  Alarmingly, the number of drug-related cases and murders climbed respectively by 37 and 14 against the previous year.

Most notably, there were no reports of wrongful conviction or imprisonment in the city.

The above statistics were announced at a meeting which took place on Tuesday to review the performance of the municipal People’s Procuracy during 2016.

As regards this year’s tasks, the focus will be on upholding the spirit of discipline amongst this agency’s staff, and exercising the power to prosecute and supervise judicial activities across the city in accordance with the national laws.  Special attention will be paid to promoting Party building work, and developing prosecutors who possess a firm political stance, good ethics, and high-level qualifications.

Addressing the review meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Viet Nam Supreme People's Procuracy, Le Minh Tri, urged the municipal People’s Procuracy to enhance the quality of conducting prosecution activities and ensure legally effective enforcement of judgments.  In particular, greater efforts should be made to avoid ruling out known criminals and issuing wrongful convictions.

Also at the meeting, under the authorisation of the State President, municipal Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Xuan Anh presented a second-class Labour Medal to the Prosecution Division of the municipal People’s Procuracy for their remarkable achievements in handling civil cases over the 2010 - 2014 period.

The municipal People’s Procuracy received an emulation flag from the Viet Nam Supreme People’s Procuracy, whilst a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister was given to the Division involved in exercising prosecutions and bringing criminal cases to the appeals court.
