Since the start of this year, Da Nang has recorded some positive results in its socio-economic performance.

A corner of the city

Between January and June, the city’s gross domestic product (GDP) is likely to have increased by 8.1% compared with the same period last year.  The total of domestic investment inflows into the local sectors are predicted to have reached 17,000 billion VND.  The city will have seen the operational efficiency of the 19,000 existing businesses, with the total registered investment capital of 97,335 billion VND.  A total investment of over 5,000 billion VND is expected to have poured into local basic construction projects.  In particular, work started on new urban infrastructure and real estate projects, especially tourism properties.

The municipal Department of Planning and Investment recently proposed that the municipal authorities should approve long and medium-term projects to ensure the disbursement of capital for them.

Also, more effective measures should be taken to remove any obstacles relating to mechanisms and polices about the State management of investment attraction, basic construction, investment models and land-use.

With regard to local environmental sanitation, the upgrading of sluice gates at the Phu Loc River Wastewater Treatment Plant has proved effective, and the environmental pollution near the Tho Quang fishing wharf in Son Tra District has been reduced considerably.

The park’s dedicated wastewater treatment plant at the Lien Chieu Industrial Park will be put into operation in the remaining months of the year.  In particular, work will start soon on a new leachate treatment plant at the Khanh Son Waste Dump in Lien Chieu District and it will be put into use by late next year.

As for local security situation, over the 6-month period, the city’s Police Department has made the significant efforts in fighting against crime.

Investigations have been conducted into 198 criminal cases in the city, involving a total of 284 people.  Local police officers have detected and dealt with 80 drug-related cases involving 116 offenders.  Over 1,200 drug addicts and users have been detected and dealt with.

Encouragingly, there have been no reports of wrongful conviction or imprisonment in the city.
Most notably, the city has seen a slight decrease in the number of road traffic accidents, deaths and injuries, against the same period of last year.

Over the rest of this year, importance will be attached to handling such matters of deep concern as murders, drug-related cases and loans from private lenders at high interest rates.  More effective solutions should be found to deal with careless drivers of dumper trucks carrying soil and stone in order to prevent them from causing possible tragic traffic accidents.

Special heed should also be paid to installing more public surveillance cameras across the city in order to monitor and deal with both security and traffic violations.   The installation of the camera system is part of the city’s efforts to reduce the number of road traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries, and to crack down on social evils and criminals, especially those involved in drug-related crimes.
