On Monday, in recognition of the 70th anniversary of the War Invalids and Martyrs’ Day (27 July), Da Nang Party Committee Secretary Nguyen Xuan Anh and representatives from the city authorities offered incense and laid wreaths at the Hoa Vang District Martyrs’ Memorial.  They also visited the historical relic site B1 Hong Phuoc in Lien Chieu District.

The Hoa Vang District Martyrs’ Memorial honours and commemorates 7,470 martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation’s re-unification and those serving in an international mission in Laos and Cambodia.  The fallen soldiers were from 19 communes in Hoa Vang District, and some were from Cam Le District’s Khue Trung Ward.

Hong Phuoc (given the secret code name B1) was one of Da Nang’s most important revolutionary bases during the 2 resistance wars against the French and the Americans.  In the latter, Hong Phuoc Village was home to 64 families, and together they dug 46 secret shelters for use as hiding places for Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers.  The villagers made great efforts to help the Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers fight against the enemy and win numerous resounding battles.  This former revolutionary base was a place where Vietnamese troops were dispatched to the Mau Than (Year of the Monkey) Spring Operation in 1968, and to the Spring 1975 Campaign.  The site’s memorial stele honours the heroic sacrifice of 11 and 17 soldiers killed during the resistance wars against the French and the Americans respectively, and one who passed away after the national reunification in 1975.

Also on Monday, Secretary Anh visited and presented gifts to 97-year-old Vietnamese heroic mother Luong Thi Tinh who now lives on Phan Van Dinh.  He wished her good health and happiness for the rest of her life.

Visiting war invalid Ngo Tan Thien from Lien Chieu District’s Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, the city leader hoped that Mr Thien would forever be a bright example for younger generations to follow, and that he would educate the younger generations about the country’s revolutionary traditions and encourage them to give their devotion to the city’s progress.
