Canadian naval ship arrives in city

On Wednesday morning, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary docked at Da Nang’s Tien Sa Port, beginning a 5-day visit to the city. The ship carries a total of 230 naval officers and sailors, headed by Lt Col Blair Saltel.

The purpose of the ship’s visit is to celebrate the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties with Viet Nam, and to boost bilateral friendship and cooperation ties with Da Nang, and Viet Nam as a whole.

The Canadian guests were warmly welcomed by representatives from the High Command of Da Nang’s Naval Zone 3, the Department of Foreign Relations under the Ministry of Defence, the municipal Department of Foreign Affairs, the Da Nang Border Guard High Command, and the city's Military Command.

Also in attendance at the welcoming ceremony was Mr Robert Bissett, Chargé d'affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Canada in Viet Nam.

During their 5-day stay in the city, the ship’s crew members will pay courtesy visits to the city’s leaders and commanders of the High Command of Naval Zone 3, and explore the beauty of the city. They will invite their partners to visit their ship, and introduce them to some Canadian technologies onboard.

Also, the Canadian naval officers and men will take part in various exchange activities with Agent Orange-affected and disabled children living at the city’s Care Centre for AO Victims and Disadvantaged Children, play a friendly football match with their colleagues from the Zone 3 Naval High Command, and talk with Phan Chau Trinh Senior High School pupils.

HMCS Calgary is a Halifax-Class frigate that has recently completed an extensive Halifax Class Modernisation/Mid-Life Refit. It has approximately 230 highly-trained and professional sailors who are well prepared to meet the challenges of their deployment on Operation Projection.
