The event, the 147th of its kind, was jointly organised by the Viet Nam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel (VNOSMP), and the Defence POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) of the US.
At the ceremony, the Vietnamese Government’s representatives handed over to the US side 3 sets of remains believed to be of American servicemen missing in action during the past war.
The remains were found in the central provinces of Nghe An, Quang Binh and Thua Thien-Hue during the 133rd Joint Field Activities with the engagement of 76 US experts and over 200 Vietnamese people.
They will then be brought to Hawaii, the US, for further review.
Rear admiral Jon Kreitz, the DPAA Deputy Director highlighted that the ceremony celebrated 30 years of Viet Nam-US cooperation in searching for the remains of US servicemen who died during the war, thereby fostering the bilateral cooperative ties between the 2 countries in humanitarian issues.
According to the US Ambassador to Viet Nam, in addition to seeking the remains of American servicemen missing during the war, the US government has worked with Viet Nam in providing information on Vietnamese missing in action, as well as in addressing dioxin-related problems at the Bien Hoa and Da Nang airports, and clearing bombs and mines in the central province of Quang Tri.
