Da Nang People's Committee Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh chaired an emergency response meeting on Saturday to discuss what next steps may need to take to tackle severe flooding in face of intense downpours and rising river levels caused by storm Linfa which is forcast to make landfall in the Central Viet Nam coastline from Quang Nam to Binh Dinh on Sunday.

Functional bodies will carry out "an immediate evacuation" of at-risk riverside areas in Da Nang, and take proactively drastic measures in response to flash floods and landslides.

Vice Chairman Minh urged the Hoa Vang District authorities to continue searching for the missing people in floods.

He also asked the authorities of districts across Da Nang to immediately evacuate people living in low-lying areas, and landslide and flash flood-prone areas, especially those living along the rivers of Yen, Tuy Loan and Cu De.

Also, markings should be used to block sections of worst-hit streets in Hoa Vang District in a bid to warn road users about dangerous flooding areas.

Special attention should be paid to providing food packets for vulnerable people who were isolated by the flood waters in Hoa Vang District.

The Da Nang Border Guard High Command and the municipal Coastal Information Station will keep all fishing boats operating at sea well informed of the storm’s position, its direction and movement. This allows them to take the initiative to quickly return to port or seek safe shelter from the storm. In addition, local offshore fishing boats are not allowed to head out to sea, and relevant agencies will keep in close contact with boats at sea in order to handle any unexpected incidents.

Besides, functional bodies were directed to take effective measures to cope with flash floods and landslides in mountainous, low-lying areas and locations along the banks of the Cu De and Tuy Loan rivers.
