The statement was made by Da Nang Party Committee Deputy Secretary cum municipal People's Council Chairman Luong Nguyen Minh Triet at a forum in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

The forum, themed ‘Promoting the implementation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) from a gender perspective”, was co-hosted by the Viet Nam Women’s Union (VWU), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality, along with the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).

The event offered an opportunity for attendees to share experience and initiatives in realising the SDGs, especially the goal of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

At the forum, the Da Nang leader shared his city’s experience in promoting gender equality and preventing violence against women and children.

In particular, many women and children protection programmes, associated with the '5 No's, 3 Yes's' programme and 'City of 4 Safe Programmes' campaign, have been carried out effectively in the city over recent years.

The Da Nang Party Committee has issued many appropriate guidelines and policies, including Directive No 25-CT / TU dated 20 October 2009 on domestic violence prevention, Directive No 06-CT / TU dated 24 April 2011 on the implementation of the National Strategy on Gender Equality during the 2011-2020 period, and Directive No 39-CT / TU issued on 24 April 2020 on making Da Nang a safer city for women and girls.

In addition, ‘Men pioneer in the prevention of violence against women and children’ model has been implemented effectively in Hai Chau and Hoa Vang districts.

Also, domestic violence rapid response teams have been set up across the city. The teams are in charge of providing active support for the victims of domestic violence, promptly detecting and handling domestic violence-related issues, and bringing into full play the role of men in preventing violence against women.

When being asked for the role of Da Nang’s women in politics, Deputy Secretary Triet remarked, the proportion of women in senior management roles in Da Nang was quite high. A combined total of 46 female cadres are holding the positions of directors and deputy directors of city-based government departments and agencies.
