With the purpose of helping disabled people solve the moving problem, lecturers and students of the Da Nang Vocational Training College have together implemented ‘The Community of Compassion Wheelchairs’ project to repair degraded wheelchairs for such people.

Already suffering much hardship in daily life, disabled people even have more toughness when their only means of moving – the wheelchairs – is broken or degraded. However, there is no wheelchair repair services in Da Nang. In its efforts to help them, the Da Nang Vocational Training College has deployed the meaningful programme.

Under the programme, the college’s lecturers and its students are collecting the damaged wheelchairs, repair and renew them for those in need. In addition, the college also works with the municipal Disabled People Association to repair degraded wheelchairs.

After two-month implementation of the project, more than 10 degraded wheelchairs have been repaired by the college’s students.

Da Nang Vocational Training College Vice principal Nguyen Thanh Thao pointed out some obstacles during the implementation of the project. Included are a lack of replacement materials and budget, and difficulties in reaching local people who need to have their wheelchairs repaired.

Municipal Disabled People Association Chairman Truong Cong Nghiem said that the organisation has found it difficult in appealing for donations of new wheelchairs for local poor disabled people as many NGOs could no longer implement support progammes for disabled people in the context of complex developments of COVID-19.

“I am very happy with the college’s wheelchair repair facility as there is no similar one in the city. The college-launched programme is very helpful to disabled people in Da Nang”, said Mr. Nghiem.

The college’s lecturers and students hope to give a helping hand to the disabled or seniors in the city as well as spread joy and love to everyone through their implementation of this programme.
