In the days of July 2022, despite the blazing summer sun, over 1,000 Youth Union members and students from schools Da Nang-wide have eagerly headed to many places to carry out the volunteer campaign "Green Summer". In the blue shirt, they enthusiastically bring youth, wisdom and enthusiasm to contribute to building and changing the appearance of some poor rural areas.

Make the most of summer in a meaningful way

On July 11, after the launching ceremony of the Summer Student Volunteer Campaign of the UD Youth Union, over 80 volunteers including staff, lecturers and students of the University of Economics brought enthusiasm of youth to head to mountainous Tien Ha Commune, Tien Phuoc District, Quang Nam province. As soon as they arrived in the new land, the whole group quickly settled into their accommodation and embarked on summer civic activities.

With the slogan "Work for the people - Don't be afraid to get tired", they were divided into many small teams to take charge of different tasks. First of all, volunteers embarked on replacing the old tile with corrugated sheet metallic for Ms Nguyen Thi Huong in Phu Vinh Village with the support of VND 10 million from the Youth Union of the DUE

After that, volunteers organized levelling, concreting hundreds of meters of dirt roads in Phu Vinh Village, helping people to travel easily. Students also recycled old tires, and broken wheels into seesaws, as well as cute and funny animals to form a children's playground at the cultural house of Trung An Village.

In addition, they also mobilized parents to send their children to English classes organized by the university to practice speaking and writing English, listen to music, watch English movies, learn knowledge about traffic safety, garbage classification and protecting the environment.

“Although the Green Summer only takes place in 15 days, with the spirit of solidarity and community outreach, the youth of the DUE has completed numerous meaningful projects which are appreciated by the local authorities. This is the clearest proof that we have had no meaningless summer days”, emphasized Ms Tran Thi Thanh Thao, Secretary of the Youth Union of the UD.

Similarly, the Youth Union of the Da Nang Architecture University has had a meaningful "Green Summer Campaign 2022" in the Ly Son island district, Quang Ngai Province. Not only did the Union aim at meaningful summer mobilization activities, but the Union also want to educate the students on patriotism, love for the sea and the homeland island.

During one week in the Ly Son island district, school students did make a 150-meter-long mural route along the embankment of Ly Son island, planted trees along some roads, renovated the playground and toilets of some kindergartens, organized an entrepreneurship orientation program for young adults on the island.

Previously, the school Union had completed the "Green Summer" journey in Ating Commune, Dong Giang District, Quang Nam Province, with a bunch of meaningful works such as renovating children's playgrounds, planting 30 trees at some schools and community areas, installing solar power systems, handing over 10 bicycles to poor students, presenting 50 encouragement gifts to needy students and giving 5 gifts to government-policy beneficiary families.

Becoming more mature from "Green Summer”

Student Dang Ngoc Son, the leader of the Hand in Hand Group of the UED- UD proudly shared that after the 10-day journey of "Green Summer", his group has "transformed" Long Tuc residential area, Tra Nam Commune, Quang Nam Province, becomes truly “green”. It is the colour of joy, cultural light and hopes for a good future.

More than 30 members of the group joined hands to complete the levelling of 450m2 of steep hills to concrete into a playground having swings, seesaws and benches for the local children here. The group also organized movie screenings and taught cultural knowledge as well as practical skills. Moreover, they also donated books to some local schools and donated clothes, and necessities to needy households.

After 10 days of participating in "Green Summer", it seems that most of the members of the group have become more mature and proficient in making fires, planting trees, carrying stones, and mixing concrete. After days of living together, the members also understand more about the living conditions, the difficulties and deprivations of the mountainous people, thereby, driving them to bring their youth, and enthusiasm to dedicate, build and improve more difficult lands.

As shared by Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Thanh Bac, Vice President of the UD, at the opening ceremony of the "Green Summer" campaign, not only is this campaign simply trips and experiences to forge skills, but it also has great social meaning and human significance. He also said that the youth people and students need to have their dreams and ideals of a noble and compassionate life, in tandem with knowing how to live usefully and responsibly to the community to truly grow up.

Student volunteers for the community

At the beginning of July 2022, the Youth Union - Student Association of the UD held the launching ceremony of the 2022 Summer Student Volunteer Campaign with the theme "The Youth of UD is creative, volunteering for the community". Secretary of the UD's Youth Union Nguyen Thanh Dat said that this year's campaign focuses on two key programs including supporting the community and schools.

The supporting community program takes place from June to August 2022 in several difficult rural and mountainous areas in the provinces such as Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Kom Tum “The purpose of the campaign is to promote the active, creative and voluntary role of the youth of UD; create an environment for training and fostering professional as well as soft skills and social activity capacity for students, thereby, contributing to strengthening educating traditional practices, morality and lifestyle for young people; consolidating and improving the quality of the unions; spreading a good image of UD students to the community," emphasized Mr Thanh Dat.
