Da Nang now has a total of about 16,000 people with severe disabilities and particularly severe disabilities, over 2,000 of whom are children.  Most of them are living in difficult circumstances and need a helping hand.

However, there are still shortcomings in the support available for local disabled people.  These include a shortage of staff specialised in disability and rehabilitation services for the disabled, along with the unimproved quality of care.

There are about 5.1 million disabled people nationwide, making up 6% of the country’s total population.  Approximately 80% of poor disabled people in urban areas and 70% in rural areas are dependant on their families, relatives and social allowances.  Therefore, they find it very hard to access medical services and education, to take vocational training courses, and therefore to get jobs.  As a result, the disabled often face many difficulties in their daily lives, as well as in community integration.
