A meeting took place in the city on Thursday to review the piloting of a digital map and the application of a geographic information system (GIS) in Da Nang’s Hai Chau District.  The event was jointly organised by the municipal People’s Committee, the local Department of Information and Communications, the Hitachi Solutions (HISOL) and Zenrin (ZRN) companies from Japan, and the FPT Information Systems Company.

More than 1 year ago, the Department of Information and Communications signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HISOL and ZRN to create a digital map of the city.  Last June, about 30,000 USD of funding from the Japanese Ministry of the Economy, Trade and Industry was spent on conducting a survey about the names of local streets and buildings, as well as home addresses in order to make a detailed map.

Between January and May of this year, the piloting of the digital map and the application of GIS were implemented over the total area of 24km2, equivalent to about 50,000 houses in this district.

A digital map of Hai Chau District has been already completed on a trial basis.  It depicts administrative boundaries, transport routes, residential housing, bus routes, traffic signals, hospitals, schools, hotels, markets and others.  In addition, the digital map features many functions such as identifying the positions of local places, and measuring the distance between them.

The Department will work closely with their Japanese partners to solve the problems which have arisen during the pilot implementation of the digital map, as well as formulate plans for revising the detailed map of the city and carrying out the application of GIS.
