Local discos and bars under scrutiny
Since 2010, the city’s police have dealt with about 300 offences involving the use of, or dealing in, illegal drugs at local discotheques and bars. There have also been another 25 cases of criminal offences such as intentionally causing injury, fighting and disturbing public order.
In addition, most of the staff at these establishments, including the security guards, waiters, waitresses and promotion girls, do not have any long-term or seasonal labour contracts.
According to the city’s Department of Taxation, some of the discos and bars report their monthly turnovers as being much lower than reality in order to reduce their tax liabilities.
These matters were all presented at a meeting of the city’s police on Thursday which discussed effective measures to prevent and deal with law violations at local discotheques and bars.
Top priority will be given to enhancing crime prevention and the suppression of illegal activities, as well as tightening the management of such businesses.
