Two new methadone maintenance treatment centres to be established soon
A methadone maintenance treatment programme has been operating in Da Nang since July 2012. During that period, 440 local drug addicts registered to participate in the programme, of whom 346 were selected to take part.
Currently, 247 of them are still receiving the treatment and their health has improved considerably. Most notably, 186 of them have found suitable jobs, accounting for 84.5% of the total number involved.
As per the request of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health, two new methadone maintenance treatment centres will be built in the city in the near future. Da Nang will be the first city in the country to have permanent employees at such centres, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the programme. Free medical testing, examinations and treatment will be given to local drug addicts.
The focus will be on enhancing the publicity about the practical significance of the programme for local drug addicts, and helping to successfully detox people, especially those take part in the programme, so that they can find jobs. Special attention will be paid to setting up satellite medicine distribution establishments to create the most favourable conditions for local drug addicts during their treatment period.
