Published: October 17, 2013

As soon as Storm Nari had passed, Da Nang’s residents, students, Youth Union members and policemen, along with military officers and men, became actively involved in dealing with all the consequences of the storm.

The Director of the city’s Green Trees-Park Company, Mr Dang Duc Thu, said that the storm had uprooted an estimated 40,000 trees in the city.  He added that his company’s workers have tidied up the fallen trees to unblock such major streets as Bach Dang, Tran Phu, Quang Trung, Nguyen Van Linh, and Ngo Quyen.

The storm caused a total of around 2.6 billion VND in property damage to the city’s Drainage and Waste Water Treatment Company.  The majority of the company’s waste water treatment plants were badly damaged, and their pump wells and fences were also ripped down.  Repairing the damage is expected to be completed over the next 10 days.

A total of 25,000 tonnes of rubbish is waiting to be taken away by the Urban Environment Company.  In addition, 750 tonnes of domestic waste and about 21,000 cubic metres of sand sea deposited along the Hoang Sa-Truong Sa route requires removal.  This work is expected to be completed later this week.

The city’s Power Company reported that many high, medium and low voltage electricity poles in the city were completely destroyed, at an estimated total cost of nearly 15 billion VND.  By the end of Wednesday, electricity had been restored in all areas in the inner-city, along with priority areas such as the Water Supply Company, hospitals, and district-level administration centres.

The Deputy Director of the Water Supply Company, Mr Nguyen Huu Ba, said that the city’s water supply had been cut during the storm.  As of noon yesterday, the water supply systems had been repaired and were back in use again.

More than 50% of the total number of damaged traffic signals have now been completely repaired.

Vietnam Airlines said that their schedule of flights into and out of Da Nang International Airport and Hue’s Phu Bai Airport had recommenced at 10pm on 15 October.  In an attempt to clear the backlog of over 2,000 passengers affected by flight cancellations during the storm, 8 additional flights were arranged for them on 16 October.  There were 6 flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, 1 between Ho Chi Minh City and Hue, and 1 between Ha Noi and Da Nang.
