Climate change adaptation in urban planning
On Monday, some members of the US Institute for Social and Environmental Transition (ISET) visited Da Nang to learn about the city’s urban planning in the context of the current climate changes.
ISET have helped 10 Asian cities, including Da Nang, to enhance climate change resilience. With support from the US organisation, the city has built a hydrology and urban development simulation model as well as helped local poor families to build new storm resistant homes.
According to the city’s Department of Construction, the “Hydrology and Urban Development Simulation Model” project has improved the city’s urban planning management. This project has also set up an important database for local water resources management and expansion, as well as enhanced the capacity for dealing with issues relating to urban development in the context of climate change.
Hydrological models will be applied in urban floodwater drainage infrastructure planning in the near future. The Department of Construction will also set up an information source about the project to help the city fulfil its socio-economic development tasks.
