A discussion about action plans to ensure low-carbon emissions at Da Nang’s industrial parks (IPs) took place on Tuesday morning.  The event was jointly organised by the city’s Department of Industry and Trade, the Industrial Policy and Strategy Institute (IPSI) of the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Asia Foundation.

The city is now home to 6 IPs which are mainly involved in the seafood processing and garments and textiles sectors.

Dr Duong Dinh Giam from the IPSI introduced action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at local IPs which are involved in seafood processing.  By the end of this year, the focus will be on operating an online database management system for businesses at the IPs, managing energy consumption, solid waste and effluent discharge and also ensuring greenhouse gas inventories.  By the end of 2017, priority will be given to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15% in fuel-using industries, and lowering electricity consumption by between 3% and 5% compared with 2013.  In addition, all businesses at the IPs will build their own energy management systems as well as train their managers.

Addressing the event, the Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Mr Phung Tan Viet, affirmed that the development of low- carbon IPs will help the city to effectively implement the “Building Da Nang into an Environmentally-friendly City” project.  He also pledged that the local authorities would create very favourable conditions to facilitate the implementation of the above-mentioned action plans.
