On Wednesday, a discussion about the use of ultraviolet (UV) light in waste water treatment took place at Da Nang’s Saigontourane Hotel.  Organised by the city’s Department of Science and Technology, the event was attended by hundreds of domestic and foreign scientists and university lecturers.

According to the city’s Centre for Energy Saving and Technology Transfer Consultancy, the recent population growth and industrial development have negatively affected water quality.  Currently, wastewater treatment technologies are based on sedimentation, filtration and purification processes or physical and chemical treatment using chlorine, ozone and other chemicals.  Meanwhile, the UV disinfection, which uses hydrogen peroxide, boasts high efficiency and convenience in wastewater treatment.  In addition, the UV treatment system has many applications such as drinking water purification and swimming pool water disinfection, as well as wastewater, air and surface treatment.  This effective method also accentuates the decomposition rate of total organic carbon (TOC).
