Over 800 of Da Nang’s Youth Union members attended a ceremony in the city on Sunday to launch the “Making the World Cleaner 2014” campaign.  Co-organised by the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment, and the city’s Youth Union, the campaign has “Take Action for a Rubbish-Free Environment” as its theme.

The municipal People’s Committee Vice Chairman, Mr Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, took the opportunity to appeal for practical and meaningful actions from local residents.  The focus should be on reducing the use of plastic bags, leaving out rubbish only at regulated places, classifying and recycling garbage, and strongly opposing the negative activities of environment pollution and wasteful use of natural resources.  Special attention should be paid to raising awareness amongst staff members of the local departments, agencies, businesses and social organisations, as well as all local citizens, about environmental protection in their living and working spaces.  This would make a significant contribution to making the world cleaner.

After the event, the local Youth Union members began a number of clean-up activities in the city.  They included picking up litter in local residential areas, schools, agencies and production establishments, dredging local drains and canals, and widely publicising environmental protection activities to local residents.

In addition, the Recycling and Green Living Festival Day and a contest to make products from recycled materials also took place across the city.  Also, more than 200 local sanitation workers were provided with free medical examinations.
