First "test tube babies" delivered

DA NANG Today
Published: December 26, 2014

Da Nang’s first so-called test tube baby was successfully delivered by caesarean section (C-section) at the Maternity and Paediatrics Hospital on Thursday morning, appropriately Christmas Day.

The birth of the baby boy brought boundless happiness to his parents, who are from Hai Chau District, and the staff of the hospital’s Infertility Department.  This marks an important milestone in developing the city’s infertility treatment services.  Infertile married couples who want children can now access modern in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment at the city’s hospital instead of only at the large hospitals in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Later the same day, 2 other IVF babies were also delivered by C-section at the hospital, a girl and a boy.

The IVF programme, the first of its kind in Da Nang and the central region and highlands as a whole, was officially launched at the hospital’s Infertility Department in March.

By the end of November, doctors in the department had conducted 140 egg aspiration cases, 116 fresh embryo transfers, and 25 frozen embryo transfers.

The infertile couples participating in the IVF programme are from 11 localities nationwide, with the majority from the central region and highlands, and one couple are foreigners.  Primary infertility cases account for 64.29% of the cases.
