Suspected contaminated apples on sale locally
Currently, there is a wide range of apples imported from the USA on sale at markets and supermarkets across Da Nang. Their prices range between 50,000 VND and 200,000 VND per kilo. Most notably, Granny Smith and Gala apples are still on sale in the city despite being recalled worldwide after the presence of listeria monocytogenes was found in some of them.
An employee from the municipal Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, which is responsible for monitoring the trade of fruit products, affirmed that he has yet to receive any instructions from local relevant agencies about dealing with the listeria bacteria-infected apples imported from the USA.

The Food Safety Administration of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health has received a warning from the International Network of Food Safety Authorities (INFOSAN) about an international recall of listeria-tainted apples and packaged apple products imported from the USA.
In the USA, the apples have reportedly killed at least 3 people and caused 30 others to need hospital treatment.
The consumption of food contaminated with the bacteria can produce symptoms including high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea and could prove fatal.
