Over recent years, ex-pats who are living and working in Da Nang have made significant contributions to the city’s progress.  Reporter Mai Trang from the Da Nang Newspaper has interviewed some of them to learn about their thoughts on the city.

Mrs Suzanna Lubran is a trustee of Newborns Vietnam, a UK registered charity dedicated to reducing neonatal mortality in the South East Asia region, with a specific focus on Viet Nam.  She has always been deeply impressed by Da Nang’s 35km-long stunning coastline, with its beautiful sunny beaches, and the great efforts made by the city’s authorities and residents to gain the trust of foreign businesses operating in the city.

She remarked that Da Nang’s effective administrative reforms, along with its favourable business environment, have made foreign investors feel secure whilst conducting their business activities in the city.  Therefore, this has encouraged them to spend more time becoming involved in local charitable activities as well as fulfilling their obligations well.

Mrs Lubran said she hoped that the city’s leaders would continue developing long and medium-term plans aimed at reaching Da Nang’s target of building it into an environmentally friendly and liveable city.  This will help to make Da Nang more attractive to foreign investors and to people who are willing to live and work here for the benefit of the city’s progress.

The Chairman of the South Korean People’s Association in central region, Mr Lee Kyoung Cheol, has lived in Da Nang for 15 years.  He expressed his high appreciation of the city’s rapid infrastructure development over recent years, including the increasing number of bridges and wide streets.

The traditional Tet customs have always left a good impression on him.  He said that most South Koreans like to travel worldwide during their traditional New Year holiday break.  In contrast, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year is a special occasion when those who live far away return to their homes to celebrate the festival with their beloved families.

Mr Lee pledged to make every effort to introduce the Vietnamese distinctive cultural identity and values to young South Korean people.  This will help to boost the bilateral cooperation and friendship between Da Nang and South Korea’s Deagu City in the years ahead.

The Head of the Taiwan Trade Association in Da Nang, Mr Chiu Cheng Tsai, has lived in the city for 15 years and he can speak Vietnamese fluently.  He always considers the city to be his second home.  His decision to invest in the city is mainly attributed to its healthy environment, friendly residents, and preferential policies for foreign investors.

Mr Chiu remarked that China’s illegal placement of the HD-981 oil drilling rig in Viet Nam’s territory waters last year negatively affected the livelihoods of local fishermen and seafood processing businesses operating in the city, including his company.  Therefore, he expressed his belief that 2015 will mark an important milestone for maintaining peace in the Bien Dong (East Sea), which is the main fishing ground for local fishermen.  He also said he hoped that the city’s leaders would continue their efforts to safeguard Viet Nam’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and maintain friendships with other countries involved in sea-related disputes, as well as further the development of the local marine economy.
