Former city leader Nguyen Ba Thanh passes away

The Chief of the Central Internal Affairs Commission of Viet Nam and former Da Nang Party Secretary Mr Nguyen Ba Thanh passed away at his home in the city at 1.10pm on Friday at the age of 62.  In May he had been diagnosed as having myelodysplastic syndrome, a type of bone marrow cancer, and he returned to Da Nang on 9 January after having had treatment for his condition in Ha Noi, Singapore and the USA.

Mr Thanh was born on 8 April 1953 in Hoa Vang District’s Hoa Tien Commune.  He started to be involved in the national revolution in 1964, and became a member of the Communist Party of Viet Nam on 13 February 1980.

During his career he held the following key positions: Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee, Chairman of Da Nang People’s Council, Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee, Head of the city’s National Assembly (NA) members’ group, member of the Vietnamese National Assembly in its 9th, 11th, 12th and 13th tenures, member of the Party Central Committee in its 10th and 11th tenures, Chief of the Central Internal Affairs Commission of Viet Nam, and Deputy Head of the Central Anti-corruption Steering Committee.

He was awarded a First Class Independence Medal from the State President in recognition of his significant contributions to the country’s progress.

A high-level funeral for Mr Thanh is to be held at his house at 189 Cach Mang Thang Tam Street, Khue Trung Ward, Cam Le District, Da Nang.

The respect paying service will begin at 2.30pm today, 14 February, and the memorial service will start at 9.30am on 16 February (the 28th day of the 12th lunar month).  He will be laid to rest later the same day in Hoa Tien Commune.
