Police have busted a street robbery gang with five members, including four students, after some of them were found snatching a handbag from a foreigner in central Viet Nam.

Police officers in Hoi An Ancient Town in Quang Nam Province said Sunday that Tran Van Thanh Tam, Le Vinh Tuan, Ha Tran Duc Thien, Ta Van Vi and Nguyen Thanh Luan had been arrested on Friday after robbing a foreigner of a handbag in the town the same day.

All of the robbers are from the province’s Dien Ban District. Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO Heritage Site that lies entirely in Minh An Ward of Hoi An City.

The victim was Nicole Elizabeth Trosper, an American woman, who reported the case to police, who then investigated and cracked down on the gang.

The five street robbers will be charged with “property robbery by snatching,” Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Xuan Nghi, chief of police of Hoi An City, said yesterday.
