Men caught illegally trapping wild animals on Son Tra

The Son Tra District Police in Da Nang recently decided to prosecute a case of illegally poaching wild animals in the city’s Son Tra Nature Reserve.

On 30 March, the Son Tra and Ngu Hanh Son inter-district Forest Management Unit detained 39-year-old Vi Van Son from Nghe An Province’s Tan Ky District for illegally trapping wild animals at sub-area No 64 in the reserve.

Seized at the scene were 90 steel wires and 10 iron jaw traps, along with a total of 3.11kg of wild animals’ bones, skin, meat and internal organs which had been cut into pieces and then grilled.

The wild animals killed were 3 red-shanked douc langurs (Pygathrix nemaeus), one muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak), one sapgreen stream frog (Hylarana nigrovittata), one horse-tailed squirrel (Sundasciurus hippurus), and one mongoose (Herpestes javanicus).

During interrogation, Son admitted that he and his associates had set up tents in the nature reserve many times in the past in order to illegally trap wild animals.  They were 49-year-old Vi Van Hoang, 52-year-old Nguyen Van Hoi, 28-year-old Nguyen Van Ly, and 25-year-old Le Thi Lan.  

The Management Unit has submitted the relevant documents to the Son Tra Police for further investigation.
