The administration of Da Nang has decided to choose land plots at prime locations to build a school campus and two parks, instead of letting them be used for commercial purposes as usual.

Such a decision will create more green spaces for the city and, more importantly, help ease the current student overcrowding in many Da Nang schools, local people said.

Nguyen Kim Dung, deputy chairman of the Da Nang Farmers’ Association, said that the association will move its office to a new place to leave its current premises for a project to build an elementary school.

The office is located on a land area of more than 1,900m², in a very favorable position, with over 40 meters of its front looking toward Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Thanh Khe District, Dung said.

As the land piece lies at a ‘golden’ location, many investors want to use it for their hotel or business projects, he added.

Secretary of the Da Nang Party Committee Tran Tho said the local government previously intended to auction the land plot where the farmers' association is located to implement a commercial project.

However, given that Tran Cao Van Elementary School has long been suffering a student overload, local authorities gave it a second thought and decided to use the land for building a new campus for the school, Dung said.

Nguyen The Quyet, the principal, said that the school now has 1,762 students, who are studying on two campuses that have long become too small for them.

Now that a new campus, with three blocks that have four floors each, is going to be constructed at the site of the office of the farmers’ association, teachers, parents and students feel very happy, Quyet said.

During a meeting with the Da Nang Architecture and Planning Council on May 21, the People’s Committee also decided to develop more parks at prime locations.

Local authorities then assigned Sun Group, a Vietnamese investor, to consider using a ‘golden’ land plot of 2,414m² bounded by the four streets Thanh Dien Hai, Tran Phu, Quang Trung, and Bach Dang, near the Novotel Hotel, to construct a park as the venue for artistic and cultural activities.

They have earmarked an area of 19,810m² in front of the Lien Chieu District administrative center for a project to build a square and a park.

As Da Nang is lacking in parks as well as other public places for artistic, cultural, recreational, and festive activities, the creation of more green spaces for local residents is very necessary, architect To Van Hung, deputy chairman of the municipal Architects’ Association, said.
