Surgeons from the Gastroenterology Department at the Da Nang Cancer Hospital have successfully performed an operation to remove a 6.5kg tumour from a 47-year-old man from Kien Giang Province’s Phu Quoc District.

Earlier, the patient had been admitted to the hospital with a swollen abdomen and severe abdominal pains.  With the help of a 128-slice CT scan, the doctors detected a tumour which had invaded his lower abdomen and was compressing the bladder and organs nearby.

The surgeons were very cautious about removing the tumour in order to avoid unexpected injuries to the ureter, external iliac arteries and bladder during the 5-hour operation.

The Head of the Department, Doctor Nguyen Thanh Hung, remarked that this was the first time that the removal of such a huge and complex retroperitoneal tumour located behind the bladder had been conducted at his hospital.

The patient is now gradually recovering, and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the next few days.
