On Saturday, a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonine) attacked a female visitor at the Khong Gian Xanh (Green Space) tourism area on Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula.

At the time, Ms Phan Thi Thu Giang, a local resident, was visiting the area with a group of friends when the male monkey suddenly charged towards her.  It brutally bit her in the eyes, and she was bleeding badly.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Da Nang General Hospital for treatment.  The wounds to Giang’s eyes were attended to, and she also received antibiotic treatment to prevent animal-to-human infectious diseases.

As reported here on 7 October, Mr Tran Van Dung from Son Tra District used his own money to buy this pig-tailed macaque from a group of local residents who had illegally captured it, and he then handed over it to the Son Tra-Ngu Hanh Son Forest Ranger Division.

The Head of the Division, Mr Tran Van Thanh, said that this type of animal usually harasses and attacks strangers, and that the monkey will be released into another location which is far away from tourism sites on the peninsula.

In March, another pig-tailed macaque attacked a group of visitors on the peninsula’s Ban Co (Chessboard) peak.  It was caught and then released into the deep forest.
