Proactive measures to cope with prolonged heavy rain

DA NANG Today
Published: October 13, 2015

Due to the effects of a cold air current accompanied by strong winds from the east, many localities in the central region have experienced moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms over the past 2 days.  In Da Nang, torrential rain has caused flooding at some locations in the inner city and elsewhere in rural areas.

Between 4.00am and 7.00am on Monday, incessant heavy downpours inundated some sections of major local streets including Nguyen Van Linh, Ong Ich Khiem, Le Duan, Dong Da, Hung Vuong, Ham Nghi, Hoang Hoa Tham, Hai Ho, Phan Chu Trinh and Le Dinh Ly.  This caused traffic chaos and made these areas dangerous for road users.  It was reported that these roads were submerged in floodwaters of between 14cm and 50cm deep.

Thanh Khe District’s traffic police officers on duty on Ham Nghi and Le Dinh Ly streets had to continuously warn road users about flooding and help many of them who became stuck in the floodwaters.

Meanwhile, some residential areas in Lien Chieu District and some internal roads in the Hoa Khanh Industrial Park were also inundated by the water.

In an attempt to deal with the flooding, employees from the city’s Water Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company quickly began dredging thick sludge and rubbish out of local drainage systems at local flood points.  Thanks to their efforts, by 9.00am on Monday the floodwaters had totally disappeared from these flood points.

Also on the same day, the city’s Thuan Phuoc Pumping Station operated at full capacity in order to decrease the volume of water in local sullage pits, whilst all the sluice gates at the pumping station on Truong Chi Cuong Street were opened.
