Illegal logging in protected forests

Published: December 15, 2015

Since mid-November, an estimated 130m3 of timber has been illegally logged from pristine woodland areas across Da Nang.  Most notably, 120m3 of it was taken from sub-region 20 of the city’s Ba Na-Nui Chua special use forest in Hoa Vang District.

However, the city’s forest rangers only managed to find and seize 10m3 of the poached timber which had been left in the special use forest by the illegal loggers.

In an effort to stop the deforestation, the Director of the Management Board of the Ba Na-Nui Chua special use forest, Mr Phan The Dung, said that his unit would arrange for 10 forest rangers to be in the special use forest around the clock up until the forthcoming Tet Festival.  The intention is to stop any more illegal logging activities in the forest area.

In addition, the municipal Forest Management Department will increase its investigations to try to arrest suspects for the illegal logging activities.
