Accommodation given to poor war veterans

The Chairman of Da Nang War Veterans’ Association, Mr Thai Thanh Hung, says that many members of his association do not have their own houses.  As a result, they and their families either have to live in rented accommodation or share the homes of relatives.

The association has recently asked the municipal People’s Committee (PC) to provide social housing apartments for 22 of its poorest members.  The PC has now given approval for 18 of them to rent apartments at a cheap price, whilst the remaining 4 cases will be resolved soon.

One of the beneficiaries is Mr Phong from Thanh Khe District’s Tan Chinh Ward.  Mr Phong, his wife, and their 2 children, have lived as part of an extended family of different generations for many years.  The couple cannot afford to buy their own house due to their difficult living conditions.  Mr Phong is a motorbike taxi driver and his earnings are not even enough to pay the tuition fees of his children or medical costs for his wife who is suffering from a life-threatening disease.  Thanks to the kindness of the city authorities and the War Veterans’ Association, Phong’s family is living in a 60m2 house with a living room and 2 bedrooms.

Another example is poor war veteran Ngo Huong from Cam Le District’s Hoa An Ward.  Over many years, Mr Huong has worked as a manual worker to earn money to cover his family’s expenditure.  He now shoulders the burden of caring for his wife who has a neurological disease and a paternal grandchild whose father died in an accident and mother left home.  Mr Huong’s family had been living in a small temporary area near the cultural house of residential group No 34 in Hoa An Ward.  After the city authorities approved their move, they are now living in an apartment in the Phuoc Ly Apartment Building.
