On Monday, the Thanh Khe District People’s Court sentenced 54-year-old Tran Thi Thom from the same district to 4 years in prison for ‘trafficking prohibited items illegally’.

According to the indictment from the district’s prosecutors, on 17 September last year, police officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Division of the Da Nang Department of Police stopped Thom whilst she was transporting 80 cartons of cigarettes which were suspected of having been imported illegally.  The police officers then made an inspection of Thom's house and seized another 840 illegally imported cartons of cigarettes.  The total value of the seized items was over 151 million VND.
