Successful creation of anus for 3-month-old boy
Doctors from the Da Nang Maternity and Paediatrics Hospital, along with American experts from the International Paediatric Specialist Alliance for the Children of Viet Nam (IPSAC-VN), have successfully performed endoscopic surgery to create an anus in the normal position for a local 3-month-old baby. The boy was born without an anus and suffered from multiple malformations. He is now recovering well from the operation.
In addition to the baby boy, the Vietnamese and American doctors also performed surgery between 7 and 11 March on 25 other children with digestive and genital-urinary deformities at the same hospital.
Initiated by Prof Dr Ai-Xuan Holterman from the USA's University of Illinois, IPSAC-VN is a philanthropic organisation of volunteer doctors and experts from many countries worldwide. Its mission is to enhance the care of the children in Viet Nam through partnerships with Vietnamese professionals in the healthcare workforce, and institutional capacity building.
Since 2010, IPSAC-VN has cooperated with the city’s Maternity and Paediatrics Hospital to perform surgery on local children with many different deformities. Over that time, a total of over 150 children from the city and neighbouring localities have been treated successfully by surgery.
